Bashundhara Group has taken another humanitarian step to empower underprivileged women living in border areas, helping them become self-reliant through free training and sewing machines.
In Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga, 20 women who completed a three-month free tailoring course recently received new sewing machines as gifts from Bashundhara Group. The initiative, implemented under the Bashundhara Shuvosangho platform, aims to create livelihood opportunities for marginalised women in remote regions.
“Thanks to the support of Bashundhara Group, this effort is not just about empowering a few women—it is the beginning of a humanitarian revolution,” said the event’s host during the handover ceremony.
Jibannagar, a quiet border upazila in Chuadanga, has long struggled with limited employment opportunities. Most residents rely on agriculture, daily labour or small businesses. For many women, economic hardship often forces them to give up education and dreams of independence.
Now, these women are finding hope through Bashundhara Group’s initiative. Under the guidance of the group’s Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan and noted writer Imdadul Haq Milan, Bashundhara Shuvosangho continues to implement social development projects across the country to uplift disadvantaged communities.
Over the past three years, Bashundhara Shuvosangho has distributed more than 3,000 sewing machines to poor women across different districts, enabling many to start home-based tailoring businesses.
At the event held at Jibannagar Thana Model Secondary School auditorium, local dignitaries attended, including Assistant Commissioner (Land) Syedzadi Mahbuba Manjur Mouna, Jibannagar Police Station OC Md Mamun Hossain Biswas, and other public representatives.
Bashundhara Shuvosangho Director Zakaria Zaman said, “We are implementing Chairman Sir’s vision under the leadership of writer Imdadul Haq Milan. Our goal is to make rural women self-reliant. After completing three months of free training, we gift sewing machines to women so they can start earning right away. Many of them are now financially independent.”
He added that the organisation also follows up with recipients to ensure long-term success. “We see that many women have already become self-sufficient, while others are on their way,” he said.
Recipients expressed heartfelt gratitude to Bashundhara Group for changing their lives.
Lipa Khatun, one of the beneficiaries, said, “My husband drives a CNG auto-rickshaw. His income alone was not enough to cover our expenses. With this sewing machine, I can now earn and support my family. I am deeply thankful to Bashundhara Group for helping me chase my dreams.”
Another recipient, Nekjan Khatun, said, “I received both training and a sewing machine for free. Now I feel confident that I can contribute to my family’s income.”
Sharmin Akter Rupa, a university student from a poor farming family, said, “This gift from Bashundhara Shuvosangho will bring a major change in my life. It’s not just a sewing machine—it’s a symbol of hope and empowerment.”
Guest speaker Syedzadi Mahbuba Manjur Mouna praised the initiative, saying, “This effort by Bashundhara Group and Shuvosangho is an excellent example of social responsibility. These 20 women can now start new chapters in their lives with dignity and financial independence. Empowering women means strengthening the entire community.”
