A specialised PCR laboratory, set up with the financial support of Bashundhara Group, has been opened in Rangamati General Hospital to facilitate coronavirus test in the hilly region.
PCR or polymerase chain reaction is a common tool used in medical and biological research labs for detecting the presence or absence of a gene to identify pathogens in deoxyribonucleic acid in human body.
Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) Executive Chairman Paban Chowdhury inaugurated the laboratory at the hospital on Thursday.
Among others, Rangamati Hill District Council Chairman Brisaketu Chakma, Deputy Commissioner Mamunur Rashid and Superintendent of Police Alamgir Kabir were present in the meeting chaired by Civil Surgeon Dr Bipash Khisa.
Paban Chowdhury said Bashundhara Group has fulfilled the dream of people in the hilly region by setting up the specialised laboratory for testing the contagion disease.
“The laboratory will not only help people of Rangamati but also patients from Khagrachhari and Bandarban districts. People will get support from the state-of-the-art facilities at the hospital,” Paban, also designated bureaucrat for Rangamati district, said.
Rangamati corona unit physician Dr Mostofa Kamal said four staff members -- a virologist and three laboratory assistants -- were appointed to maintain service.
Earlier on June 26, BEZA Executive Chairman Paban Chowdhury handed over a cheque for Tk 6.9 million to Rangamati Civil Surgeon Dr Bipash Khisa to facilitate the PCR lab. Bashundhara Group provided the money as part of its corporate social responsibilities.
